The young Japanese students from Tamagawa Middle Division have been frequent visitors to Vancouver Island since 1984.
As part of the school's
international Education Programs, students in the 8th grade are given an opportunity to visit Nanaimo for an intensive, 12-day English language
and interpersonal communication program. During this custom-designed curriculum the Tamagawa Nanaimo facility becomes an "English Only Zone"
where students are challenged to demonstrate real-life skills in an all English environment.
During the day the students are off-site frequently,
participating in rock climbing, canoeing, hiking and an overnight sea kayaking excursion to a local provincial marine park. Sightseeing day trips to both Victoria and Vancouver cap off this exciting program
Tamagawa is a member of Round Square, a worldwide association of 61 schools on five continents that have made a commitment beyond academics, to
personal development and responsibility. Like the member institutions of Round Square, the Tamagawa Nanaimo Campus is a firm believer and practitioner of
experiential education. Round Square is in fact based on the theories of one of the foremost revolutionaries in experiential education, Dr. Kurt Hahn.
The Tamagawa Academy Middle Division International Program at the Tamagawa Nanaimo Campus is a direct result of our attempts to bridge
Tamagawa's "Zenjin"(whole-person) philosophy with those of experiential education.
